Match Report

A spirited performance from Purley Walcountians wasn’t quite enough to take the points this weekend, as they went down 2–1 to London Wayfarers in a tightly contested match against what was arguably the strongest side they’ve faced so far this season.

The game began at a frantic pace, with Wayfarers showing their quality early on. Within the first ten minutes, Jacob pulled off an incredible triple save — including one off the grill — to keep the scores level and lift the team. It was pure commitment and reflexes, earning him a nailed-on Champagne Moment.

The first half remained evenly balanced, with both sides creating chances but failing to convert. Purley’s midfield, led by the ever-industrious Cal, kept things ticking — breaking up play, linking defence and attack, and driving the team forward. Just as it looked like the sides would go in level, Wayfarers managed to sneak one in moments before half time to take a 1–0 lead.

The second half saw more end-to-end hockey, with Purley pushing higher and committing numbers forward. However, Wayfarers struck again midway through the half, doubling their advantage despite Purley’s growing pressure.

Refusing to fold, Purley hit back with renewed energy. The goal came from a clever 2-on-1 with Benji, who slipped the ball perfectly across the keeper, allowing Rich to tap it in and make it 2–1. Despite this momentum, the equaliser proved elusive in the closing minutes.

The lads were left ruing missed chances — none more so than Rich’s unforgettable moment. After collecting a delicious reverse pass from Harry Whit and finding himself clean through on goal, Rich did everything right — until he didn’t. One-on-one with the keeper, he calmly rounded him, the goal wide open, glory within reach… and then chose to finish with the back of his stick. And that’s the moment he knew he messed up. A decision that left teammates stunned, spectators amused, and the Dick of the Day award beyond any doubt.

All in all, it was a gritty showing with plenty to build on against top-quality opposition. Cal took a well-earned Man of the Match for his composure and graft in midfield. Plenty of fight, plenty of spirit — just missing that final touch. Onwards to next week!
