Match Report

Purley got their season on track in confident fashion with a commanding 2–0 victory over a strong and well drilled Old Tonbridgians side — a performance full of composure and control.

From the first whistle, Purley looked like a team with a plan. Their pre game chat clearly paid off — greater strength in possession, smart ball recycling through the guards and half-backs, and slick movement across the pitch stretched OT’s from the off. With Harry, Dave, and Jiano pulling strings in midfield, Purley dictated the tempo and created early problems for the visitors.

Thirteen minutes in, the pressure told. A sharp exchange between Benji, Jordan, Harry, and Russ opened up the OT’s defence. Jordan’s reverse shot was blocked, but Benji reacted quickest, smashing home a half volley into the bottom corner. 1–0 Purley, and fully deserved.

With confidence growing, Purley continued to dominate. The backline looked composed, and the forwards kept asking questions. The second goal came twenty minutes in after a slick passing move at the top of the D — Jiano and Dave combining neatly before Dave unleashed a low bullet into the bottom corner. 2–0 Purley, and the home crowd (George) loving it.

Old Tonbridgians rallied late in the half, forcing a couple of short corners, but Jacob in goal stood firm with a pair of smart saves. Calm defending across the back ensured Purley went into the break with a comfortable two goal cushion.

The second half saw more of the same — Purley in control, OT’s struggling to create much trouble. A goal line clearance from Josh and a sharp, one handed save from Jacob were the only scares. At the other end, Purley continued to threaten. Josh made a rare foray forward, putting through Jamie who squared for Harry to whip in a dangerous cross to the P spot, a move that nearly saw Russ score from close range, only to be denied by a brave stop on the line.

Then came the lighter moments. Tony, clearly in a generous mood, smashed the ball out of play instead of returning it following an injury stoppage — an early contender for “DoD”. But Russ wasn’t about to let that title slip away, somehow missing from point blank range after excellent buildup play from Harry and Benji. Cue groans, laughter, and a few head in hands moments on the sideline.

Still, Purley’s composure never wavered. They continued to move the ball with confidence, carving out more chances as the opposition tired, with both Tom and Benji coming close. The final whistle confirmed a well earned 2–0 win — a statement performance and the perfect platform to build upon.

Harry was immense in midfield, deservedly taking home the Man of the Match honours, with Benji and Dave also earning praise for their tireless work.

Next up: Wimbledon. If Purley can maintain this level of discipline, energy, and sharpness, they’ll fancy their chances of making it back to back wins.
